How To Handle Wedding Flowers
One of my most asked questions, Is there anything I should or should not do with my wedding flowers before you get them? Let’s talk about it!
Timing is Key: Arrange for flower delivery as close to the event as possible to ensure freshness. Ideally, flowers should be delivered 1-2 days before the wedding.
Proper Storage: Upon delivery, store flowers in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and drafts. Keep them in water and away from fruits as they emit ethylene gas which can shorten the lifespan of flowers. (Bananas are the enemy)
Hydration is Vital: Keep flowers hydrated by placing them in fresh water.
If you are not bringing your flowers to be preserved the day after your wedding: The morning after your wedding, trim stems at a 45 degree angle before placing them in fresh water to allow for better water absorption, replace water daily.
Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Keep flowers away from extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, as they can wilt quickly. Avoid placing them near heaters or air conditioning vents.
Handle with Care: If you are thinking of tossing your bouquet before sending it my way, please think again! Handle flowers gently to avoid bruising or damaging delicate petals and stems. Use clean, sharp scissors or floral shears to trim stems and remove any wilted or damaged foliage.
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Once at the venue, place flowers in a cool, shaded area away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Direct sunlight can cause flowers to wilt prematurely and lose their vibrant colors.
Avoid Spray Chemicals: Your florist may use spray on them, that’s one thing that is acceptable. But please avoid hairspray at all costs!
